Fleet Maintenance

These tips on fleet maintenance when followed will help keep the mobility of your organization prepared for the next time they are called to action. With proper preventative maintenance, the vehicles in your fleet will be roadworthy each time they leave the shop. The benefits are many, less accidents will lead to low fleet insurance premium. Follow the plan below to keep a lid on your fleet insurance costs.

The Maintenance Plan

Keeping a fleet of vehicles roadworthy does not just occur by accident, it is planned. This plan must be documented so all responsible personnel in your organization know their duties. This document must include the following;

1.Pre Departure Checklist completed by the driver.
2.Regularly scheduled maintenance tasked to the maintenance technicians.
3.Documents for keeping a record of maintenance and repair history for each vehicle.
4.A flow chart of who is responsible for what.

Preventive Maintenance

With regular inspection and proper lubrication, a preventive maintenance schedule can not only help keep your vehicles on the road more, but prevents costly breakdowns. One fact will always be a constant when it comes to moving parts like what keeps vehicles on the road, they wear out.


Proper lubrication does reduce the wear and tear on moving parts, but eventually, they will have to be replaced. By having inspections on a regular basis, these worn parts can be identified and replaced when needed. The alternative is to have the vehicles breakdown on the road with the need of being towed back to the shop. The cargo they contain will also have to be dealt with.

Keep Track of all Data

Vehicles let a person know how they are performing if they listen to them. By tracking the fuel mileage, oil consumption and tire wear most of the moving parts can be sending messages a technician can understand. 

As an example tire wear. 

  • With the center of the tire has less tread than the outer, the tire is over inflated. 

  • The center has more tread than the outer sections is a sign the tire is underinflated. 

  • If the outer edge of the tire has reduced tread then the camber or toe is out of adjustment. 

  • If the tread has a wave pattern to it then the shocks are worn.

Documentation

With the new technology in place in the shop, the documentation process for fleet maintenance should be completed digitally. This makes it possible to always be organized and know the current status of each vehicle with the touch of a button. 

The new programs are easy to use and make it possible to know if any inspections are missed and when routine maintenance is due.

The old adage don’t fix it if it is not broken

For those that do not follow these tips on fleet maintenance and follow the old world pattern of’ if it’s not broken don’t fix it’, be prepared for higher vehicle maintenance costs. When a worn part breaks while under stress it damages other parts. The towing of the vehicle is not cheap and the packages or contents of the broken down vehicle still need to get to their destination.
